In early 2015 a beautiful Great Dane/Husky came into our care. Fletcher is now 5-years-old and continues "looking" for his very own human. Fletcher has been blind his whole life. Although he appears to sometimes see things, that is evidence of how he has adapted to his disability. His vision, or complete lack of it, was verified by a professional animal ophthalmologist. Fletch does not know anything different, but humans have a tendency to feel sorry for this big boy which has resulted in Fletcher having some behavioral issues.

Fletcher, like any dog, gets bored. He is a very smart boy and needs someone looking for a dog to participate in dog challenging activities (obedience, nose work, etc.).

Fletcher desperately needs someone who will NOT feel sorry for him, but a human who is willing to help build his confidence through both appropriate leadership and mental exercises. Despite his blindness, Fletcher is completely capable of meeting all the basic behavioral requirements of a seeing dog if asked of him. Unfortunately, not very much has been asked of Fletcher, so he has learned to be stubborn – he doesn’t have to sit, down, wait, walk…. Because most often people cave in and give him what he wants.

Fletcher needs someone who will expect more of him, and as a result, help him become the dog he truly can be.

Fletcher is presently staying at our holding kennel after trying a few different foster homes.

Here is what we have learned about Fletcher:

Fletcher needs time to acclimate to new surroundings. He’s been in the shelter now for quite some time, but when he first arrived – he was NOT comfortable in his new surroundings. It took time and patience to get him there. Because of his blindness, he can get overstimulated quickly. He doesn’t know what is around him, which can cause fearful reactions. Because of his insecurity and fears, he has learned to pick a human, claim that human and guard that human. (He wants to keep his human close for protection and security). For this reason, Fletcher would be best suited for a home with a lot of routine and for a human who is dog knowledgeable or very interested and willing to learn about dog behavior.

He will need a confident human who can challenge these pushy behaviors but also build Fletcher’s confidence and security.

Fletcher would do best without other dogs or cats – In addition to a very strong prey drive, other animals are ‘unpredicatable’ to Fletcher. He wasn’t given enough experience around them in his former life, so he prefers to be without the company of other animals.

He walks well on a leash, but needs instruction – so he needs a walker who will interact with Fletcher on his walks. (Step up, Step Down, Watch it!). Fletcher does enjoy walks with the kennel volunteers who help him feel safe and secure on his walks.

Fletcher does LOVE riding in the car, treats, and frozen carrots!! Fletcher does enjoy time in the play yard, playing fetch and tug. A home with a fenced in yard is necessary for him and he will learn his boundaries in short order.

Fletcher needs a family that will provide him with guidance and leadership and not pity.

He loves his stuffed toys and looks adorable carrying them!

Stuffed toy collection included with adoption!
