I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!
Kane is a 6 year old Shar Pei mix. He is a unique dog both in his unusual look and his quirky personality. His beautiful ears almost always stand up and he has the signature Shar Pei wrinkles.
Kane is a low-medium energy dog. All he needs is a morning walk and a few minutes of play time in the afternoon and/or evening. His foster mom started off walking him a mile each morning, but Kane let her know that was too much for him to handle on a daily basis. When he doesn’t want to walk, he plants his feet at the end of the driveway and gives his foster mom “the look.” Currently, he walks between a quarter mile to a mile in the morning, depending on his mood and energy level. He loves to play tug of war with his rope and to “fetch” tennis balls (minus the whole giving the them back business). He also likes to nip at feet when he is excited! But don’t worry, he won’t hurt you. That is his way of saying he wants to play. He also enjoys chasing and barking at the Roomba robot vacuum!
Kane is great in the car and seems to look forward to car rides. He either sits and looks out the window or curls up in the backseat. He would love daily car rides, even short ones. He also likes to be outside on his foster mom’s deck. He is content to lay down and catch some vitamin D as long as it’s not too hot.
Kane lived with two dogs previously, and we are told he was buddies with one of them. Since he came into rescue, he hasn’t shown interest in playing with other dogs. We think he would do best in a home where he can be the only dog. He isn’t interested in cats either. He could probably live with a dog-savvy cat as long as he doesn’t have access to the litter box.
Kane is excellent about going in his crate at night and when his foster mom leaves the house for a few hours. While he is good about the crate, he prefers to sleep in the big bed with his people. In fact, Kane prefers to spend all of his time near people. He sits next to his foster mom or on her lap on the couch. During the day when she works, he sleeps by her feet or in his big dog bed.
Kane is house trained and he quickly does his business in the same place when taken outside. However, if you don’t keep him on a schedule he will have an accident inside.
Kane was very much loved by his previous owner and she is still heartbroken that she had to part with him. Circumstances beyond her control forced her to turn him over to a rescue. Kane has bonded with his foster mom and he is sometimes fearful/cautious of new people that approach him when he’s with her. Sometimes (not consistently) he barks at new folks. Luckily, this is short lived and so far Kane has warmed up to everyone he’s met. Because Kane loves his people so much, we prefer he go to a home with someone who is home most of the day.
While Kane can walk just fine, he does have a bit of an unusual gait. And sometimes his head “bobbles” when he walks. This is possibly neurological in origin due to trauma as a puppy. The vet is not concerned, and all of his bloodwork and other tests indicate that he is very healthy. One thing potential adopters may find to be a drawback is that Kane is deaf. You need to have his attention and use signs/body language to communicate with him. Kane has become very attentive to his foster mom and follows her everywhere, so she does not need to work hard to gain his attention. He frequently looks at her to see what is going on or what is coming next. He has picked up some signs and with consistent training, he will easily learn to “listen” and respond to more. His foster mom doesn’t think of Kane as having a “disability.” He is a wonderful companion and will be an affectionate pet for a lucky person or family!
Kane has been dining with his foster mom at outdoor restaurants. Everyone commented on how well behaved he was and he even made the facebook page of a local dining establishment.
