Hunter needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?
Hunter, a very handsome, 3 year old German Shepherd/Greyhound Mix who is blossoming into such a sweetheart. His original owner had to go into a nursing home and Hunter was crated or tied outside for some time. He is now thriving on socialization and learning new things! He met several dogs and the 3 year old grandchildren in his first foster home and did well with them all. Hunter now lives with two other dogs and a cat in his current foster home. He is cat-friendly inside the home - but will chase a cat outside due to a high prey drive. He is well-mannered and wants to be with us. Hunter has never been destructive in any way, but has nonetheless clearly benefited from the rules and structure, and watching the other dogs, in our “pack.” Hunter learns very quickly. When we took Hunter in, he was possessive of his toys, but he has learned to give up his toys to hand. We have also begun clicker training with Hunter and are teaching him the “touch” command and to walk on a treadmill. Hunter was not thrilled with car rides when we got him, but is learning to like them, especially when watching the other dogs and learning car rides typically end up in group dog walk or other ways of spending time with other dogs and people. However, Hunter is exuberant and has a lot of energy to expend (hence the treadmill training). He is oh-so-well-mannered and focused in the house, follows the rules, and clearly wants to be a good dog. But Hunter is a young, energetic dog who needs a lot of exercise. Outside, Hunter sometimes cannot contain himself. When he sees movement, like a squirrel or bird, and the sight hound in him comes out, he is off like a shot. Hunter reflects pure joy when running. Most definitely a greyhound. Difficult to be angry with him when he’s having such a great time, but not acceptable nonetheless. Hunter is an awesome, well-behaved, companion dog indoors. He clearly wants to be with and to please his people. But outside, Hunter needs a fenced yard where he can expend his energy. His fosters are devastated to be unable to adopt him. But we are confident Hunter will make an awesome companion to an owner who can provide a home that meets his needs.
