Ricky is approximately 4 to 6 years old. He is a handsome Shepherd Mix with a soft sable coat and a yellow head.  He is very tall and lanky and presently weighs about 70 pounds.  He is very thin so may top out at 80 or 85 pounds.  This poor guy was found sleeping on someone's porch.  He is a sweet friendly guy who loves the company of other dogs.  He is moderately active and has a real bounce to his step!  Ricky is well behaved and is housetrained.  He is currently in a home with 3 dogs and a cat.  Whoever adopts this fellow will be very lucky!  He is a charmer.

Foster Update:  Ricky has been in our home for 24 hours.  He was to the vet this morning where everyone fell in love with him.  He gets along well with the dogs in the household.  This boy is one of those special dogs!  Worms his way into your heart immediately.  Last night he slept quietly beside my bed on a thick comfy doggie bed.  His foster sisters are trying to teach him how to use the doggie door, but he is still a little intimidated by that swinging piece of plastic.  Ricky needs some dental work because his front teeth are broken and worn - possibly due to chewing on a kennel or crate. However, he is not destructive at all in the house.  This dog is a keeper - I'm trying not to become too attached :)

2/7/2014:  Ricky continues to do very well.  He is eating well and shows no signs of food aggression.  He is learning to wait to dive into his food until we say, "TAKE IT!"  He will sit nicely for treats along side his foster sisters. Ricky still hasn't mastered the doggie door.  Ricky isn't a bold dog by any means and he seems to be a little intimidated by the flap on the dog door.  We're working on it!  He does tell me when he needs to go out.   When I leave the house, Ricky is crated.  I don't think this guy would be at all destructive -- we crate because he is new to our household and our furry pack.  He seems to like his crate and often goes into the crate to nap on his dog bed and cozy comforter which he loves.  Ricky sleeps quietly at night in our bedroom on a cozy thick dog bed.  He never attempts to get up on furniture even though his foster sisters sleep on the couch.  He is just such a well behaved boy.

Ricky will be neutered, have his broken front teeth removed, and his eyelid repaired (it turns in slightly and irritates his eye--entropia) on Tuesday, February 11.  This sweet boy will be available for adoption when he heals from dental surgery.

Foster Update 2/17/2014:  Ricky continues to worm his way into our hearts.  He is recovering from dental surgery and eye surgery.  I still moisten his kibble so that it is very soft and easier for him to eat.  He has a great appetite and isn't beyond a little countersurfing if something smells REALLY good.  Yesterday my husband took him for a walk with our pack off leash.  He listened very well.  I wouldn't try this in an environment where there are streets and roads unless he is trained for immediate RECALL - we live on top of a mountain with fields and woods.

Ricky would do best in a home with another gentle but playful companion dog.  He loves to romp a little with my lab and boxer, but settles down quickly and looks great laying in front of the fireplace sleeping.  Someone is going to be very lucky to add this guy to their family.

Foster Update 2/26/2014:  Ricky had surgery on his lower eyelid this morning and he is now home and doing well.  Hopefully, he will have relief from the constant irritation of an inverted lid.  He made a hit with everyone at the vet clinic--they said he was very cooperative, friendly, and gentle.  This guy is a gentle soul.  It's going to be difficult saying good bye to this guy--we keep reminding ourselves that we are just a stepping stone to his loving forever home.  He has become quite the character, too.  Now that he feels a part of our family he has started to collect "things".  He carries shoes, socks, hats, gloves, etc. into our piano room and makes a pile of collectibles.  NEVER chews anything -- he is simply a gatherer!  If we can't find a shoe or boot, we always check the front room.
