This is ONE AWESOME DOG.
Ritter is hoping for a REAL home in the New Year. He was apparently abandoned outside of Sunbury as he was found roaming a hillside looking for someone to help him. He appears to be less than two years old and is in excellent health. When rescued he had some hair loss which seemed to be due to fleas. His haircoat is now healthy and shiny. When Ritter came to us he needed work on manners and leash walking, but he is a fast learner and has become a wonderful affectionate companion. He now loves to crawl into a lap and give kisses. Ritter is housetrained and not destructive. He gets along with other dogs and has learned to get along with a cat. He's hoping for a family who will love him forever and not toss him away. He's ready to learn and to please a new owner.
12/20/2014: Ritter has had a good bath and is now a beautiful deep shiny chocolate. Still has to grow some hair over his hindquarters - but it is coming in nicely. Please consider meeting our sweet Ritter.
1/18/2015: Ritter is patiently waiting for a foster or forever home. He has blossomed since coming into rescue. He's learning to walk nicely on a leash and just loves getting attention from the volunteers who care for him. It seems like he would rather hang out in the kennel area with volunteers than go for a walk. Ritter is very respectful of his kennel area - keeping it very neat - never destructive in the least bit and NEVER soils his area even when he's had a bout with diarrhea. He WAITS to go outside. A sweet boy who deserves a home of his own. Ritter is just waiting for you to come -- take him home -- and love him forever.
1/24/2015: GREAT UPDATE from Foster!- Ritter rides nicely in a car. Ritter does stairs. Ritter has not touched any of my trash cans or laundry, or anything on the counter. Ritter has not chewed anything up. Ritter walked for about an hour today, through populated areas on a Halti with a slack leash, and no issues, even with people, traffic and a guy on a bicycle! Ritter appears to have no food or toy aggression and is very good with other dogs. Ritter has not even made any attempt to jump over my 4' fence, even with my neighbor out with his boxer. Ritter knows sit, and now, he is working on adding lay down to his repertoire. :)
Update 2/1/2014: Ritter is learning more each day with his foster family. See the videos on this page for progress made in getting along with the family cat. He's also learning to "leave it" -- great pics attached of him waiting for a "pumpkin" cookie. He's going to be a wonderful companion.

Applications are the first step in the adoption process. Please do not call or email simply to express interest. We are all volunteers and receiving your application saves us time and helps to determine the best match for both people and dogs.
We provide as much information as we currently have on each dog in their description. For questions on the adoption process, including fees, please review the Adoption page. If you have additional questions or are interested in adopting, please fill out an adoption application. Once we receive your application someone will be in touch to answer your questions.
We do not arrange visits to meet dogs without an application. If you'd like to meet a variety of dogs without filling out an application please attend one of our events, listed under the events link.
Thank you!
