Charcoal was saved from death at a shelter in NC. He is a 5 year old malamute/husky/retriever/lab mix with piercing amber eyes and a fluffy black and white coat.
FROM his RESCUER: Charcole is an incredibly mellow boy who more than anything wants loves. It's hard to believe it, but this dog was unapproachable in his kennel growling and barking at all who approached. I will not lie, he even scared me. For nearly two weeks he went without human contact as the staff at the shelter were terrified of him. However, I knew that H2H was this guy's only chance. I sat at his kennel and feed him beef liver treats as 4 kennel workers watched behind another gate - it was just me and this big guy. Slowly I saw his eyes gain their spark back, I opened the kennel and fed him so more. then petted him and fed him. Finally, I get the slip lead on him and out we went! The minute he was out he gave a great sigh and a big shake as if to shake everything away. Out of the kennel came the biggest softie there. He went up to all the staff with a tail wag and just leaned in for pets and hugs. For two weeks, this dog with the big heart had sat untouched and now he was determined to make up for it! There were many tears shed as we walked out and all the staff gave him hugs goodbye as up until an hour ago they were sure he would be PTS.
Charcoal is so incredibly loving. His favorite place is with people and more specifically in your lap. His new foster mom reports that he really is a sweet gentle soul. He has not shown any of the aggression the kennel workers once saw. However, he is so afraid. On the transport down for 4 hours he refused to leave the crate, shaking and balking. When confronted with stairs for the first time, he cried out and had to be lured with cheese. Yet, as each new fear is conquered he continues to get better and better. He will continue to need socialization and will be a flight risk, but he will make one great companion.
His foster mom reports that he is great with her cats and tries to play with them as if they were puppies. He also has learned what "fetch" is and enjoys playing it with his foster mom! He walks great on leash, but that's no surprise as his favorite place is right next to his people! FOSTER UPDATE DAY 2: I've only had Charcole for a couple days, but he's made some progress since he's been here. He does great on a leash, as well as a runner leash. I put him on a runner in the backyard so that he can walk or run as he pleased. I learned that he loves playing fetch. He knows how to go get the ball and bring it back. He has a very playful side to him. When I first got him, I wasn't sure how he'd get along with cats. I introduced him to both of my cats, one at a time, and did amazingly well. He knows they're in the house, but just goes about doing what he wants without letting them bother him. I went to my parents' to introduce him and possibly have him get to know my family dogs as well. I was surprised at how well him and my two family dogs got a long. He growled some, nothing major came out of it. My parents also have cats and he acted the same around them as he did with my own. He's very lovable, gentle, and stays by my side. I reward him with cheese and hot dogs. I couldn't be more proud of him and how big of a success that he's making. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Mr. Charcole!"
